"Steele was jabbing desperately at something which had come from the darkness above. As Nelson turned his helmet light upward he saw with a thrill of horror the hideous arm of a giant cuttlefish encircle his comrade's neck and jerk him from his feet." The Mystery Under The Sea, Weird Tales (Jan. 1926), More Not At Night (Sept. 1926) I guess it's not really all that surprising to find the Patron Saint of UFO cover-up conspiracies represented in the Not At Night's as ex-marine Major Keyhoe (1897-1988) wrote for a number of pulp magazines long before he penned the article that would make him famous. In January 1950, True magazine published his article Flying Saucers Are Real which, by March of the same year he had expanded into a book bearing the same uncompromising title. The word was that he'd been assisted in his research by disgruntled ex-employees of a disbanded Government Agency, Project Sign, which had been formed for the sole purpose of examining UFO reports. On the strength of his book, Keyhoe became a figurehead for the fledgling UFO community. He would continue with his crusade versus the 'cosmic cover-up' for the rest of his days. You can read Flying Saucers Are Real (Fawcett, 1950) at: www.nicap.dabsol.co.uk/fsar-chapters.htm I know, I know! Not exactly a total legend of the Night's as he only had the one, comic-strip yarn included in the series. But an interesting bloke, none the less.

Finally found me a copy of another of Keyhoe's "non-fiction" works, Flying Saucers From Outer Space (Tandem, 1973). "One thing's absolutely certain. We're being watched by beings from outer space". Presumably the cover photograph is intended as proof that this is indeed the case.
