Today Seabury Quinn (1889-1969) is better remembered - if at all - for the stories "The Phantom Farmhouse", "The Cloth Of Madness" and "Roads", none of which featured his most enduring creation, phantom fighter Jules de Grandin. "The Phantom Farmhouse", the first of his stories to appear in "Weird Tales" (Oct. 1923) is an above average werewolf story and shouldn't prove too troublesome to locate as it's often been included in anthologies. Likewise, "The Cloth Of Madness", a tale of decoration-induced insanity turns up a number of times in Kurt Singer anthologies. "Roads" is a fantasy telling of a soldier present at the crucifixion who, after a number of adventures becomes Santa Claus (it's not as mawkish as it sounds).
The de Grandins were among the most popular stories ever published in "Weird Tales", but when the magazine finally collapsed in the early 'fifties, that was the last we got to read of the fiesty Frenchman's adventures too. Admittedly, he'd maybe overstayed his welcome by then. Of the later stories I've read like "Vampire Kith And Kin", there seems to be a slight lack of spark. Many (but not all) of the best were written and set during the Prohibition era (1920-1933). While de Grandin, Trowbridge and regular guest star Sgt. Costello rarely concluded a story on anything other than a monumental Whiskey binge, de Grandin was forever railing against the draconian law, but this denial of alcohol seemed to bring out the best in the evil scientists, vampires, mummies, demons and sundry monsters and master criminals who set up headquarters in Harrisonville.
In all, there were 93 Jules de Grandin adventures over 26 years. Dr. Samuel Trowbridge, de Grandin's right hand man, had earlier appeared in the story "Stone Image" published in "The Thrill Book". This listing isn't going to be much use to anybody without several thousand pounds to splash, so I'll try and put together some details of the books where many of the stories have been collected or anthologised. For now, here's the 93 in chronological order of appearance in WT.
